Barley Close Farm
One visitor to Barley Close Farm said: “We loved the fresh air, beautiful fields, flower garden and lovely views. This is a heavenly place”
They’re not kidding!
Barley Close Farm near Hawkchurch is a delightfully quiet bed and breakfast spot at the edge of East Devon, close to the border with Dorset.
Run by Janet Burrough and her husband Bill they have been welcoming visitors from all over the world to their farm for the last 20 years. The farm itself, which is home to either beef cattle or sheep, is situated only 6 miles from Axminster so is in a perfect position to explore not only East Devon but also the rest of the Jurassic coastline.
Surrounded by beautiful, open countryside, it’s peaceful, quietly busy with the timeless activity of farming and caring for the countryside yet modern enough to make it the perfect spot for a weekend break or longer holiday.
“Janet treats you like one of the family”
Visitors are welcomed into the family home and while you’re here it’s like home from home. The main difference is that as you sit at the breakfast table you feast your eyes on the open countryside while you feast on the wonderful breakfast that Janet will cook for you. You can see for miles across the fields to the woods in the distance.
There are two bedrooms to choose from, both available all year round. Both rooms have facilities to make your own tea and coffee whenever you feel like it. Additionally they are equipped with a TV, although you will most likely prefer the magnificent countryside surrounding the farm. There’s also a private bathroom available.
Green is such a restful colour and you’ll find yourself surrounded by it here all year round. In the summer a blaze of glory in the garden and covering the walls of the house accentuate the green of the country. Janet and Bill are great gardeners and you’re sure to enjoy their wonderful displays of hanging baskets.
You will love the walks in the woods and through the fields too. Take a stroll along the footpaths to Hawkchurch, where you can enjoy a meal at the Old Inn, the local pub.
If you don’t feel like going out, Janet offers a superb choice of two course evening meals followed by a glass of wine, tea or coffee. They start from just £9 and are excellent value for money.
Next morning you can enjoy a full English breakfast which will set you up for another day of exploring the area. Janet can also prepare a packed lunch for you to take if you want to spend the day enjoying one of the many walks in the area or are having a day on the beach. Hawkchurch is a good base for cycling too. Have a look at the days out page for other ideas for things to do while you’re here.
I feel certain that when you get here you won’t want to leave. Janet knows that too, that’s why she offers you a discount for a second night or more. Use the contact form at the bottom of the page to check exact prices and availability as it does vary throughout the year.
