The Hare and Hounds is perched on the top of a hill at Putts Corner between Honiton and Sidmouth. It overlooks the Sid valley and you can enjoy wonderful views from the large garden across the valley to the sea at Sidmouth. There is a superb carvery and a selection of excellent wines.
All the food is freshly prepared and cooked to order. The meat for the carvery is beautifully cooked and melts in your mouth. There are loads of vegetables to choose from too.
Oh yes and the desserts are to die for, that's if you've got any room left after the carvery.
The Hare and Hounds has a really good reputation with the local people and is a popular place to enjoy a meal out. You will find it excellent value for money.
If you are vegetarian you can enjoy the Nut Roast instead of the meat, but you need to ask for this when you buy your carvery ticket because it’s cooked to order.
It doesn’t matter what time of day it is when you feel hungry. You can have breakfast from 9am until late in the day. You can have a drink in the bar from 10am until 11pm during the week and between 12pm and 10.30pm on Sundays.
Because of it’s popularity with the local people it’s advisable to book a table at the weekend, on Bank Holidays and during school holidays. The phone number is at the end of this page.
In times past the Hare and Hounds was called Hunters Lodge and is steeped in history. During the 17th Century it was, as now, popular with local people but for a different reason. Poachers and smugglers liked to gather here and there’s a rumour that more than one murder was committed here.
At the front of the building is a large stone. Local legend says that when the stone hears the bells of Sidbury church it rolls down the hill to drink at the River Sid. One version of the story says that whilst it’s there it washes off the bloodstains – gruesome!
Whatever the truth about the 17th Century is I can tell you from personal experience that in the 21st Century the food at the Hare and Hounds is hard to beat. I can highly recommend it.
