Higher Watchcombe Farm
– a visitor’s view

“We could not fault anything”

Higher Watchcombe Farm nestles at the top of the Umborne valley, a beautiful and secluded spot. This part of East Devon has been designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and with good reason. The valley faces south towards the sea and enjoys a mild and pleasant climate.

The cottages at Higher Watchcombe Farm have a 4 star rating from the English Tourist Board. As you would expect the holiday cottages are extremely high quality and spotlessly clean. They feel like your own home with everything you need to enjoy your cottage holiday.

All six cottages are completely self-contained so they all feel very private. Having been converted from barns in the early 1980s they are dotted around what used to be the farmyard. Each house has its own private patio, complete with garden furniture, so that you can sit and enjoy the magnificent view of the countryside.

There is a range of sizes to choose from, the cottages have between one and three bedrooms, so whatever the size of your family you will find the perfect match. My favourite is Meg’s Roost a cosy cottage near the entrance. It is a perfect honeymoon suite to relax in and would make a fantastic place to take a second honeymoon in too. If I didn’t live so nearby I would be booking today.

Jane and Paul Galloway will make you welcome whatever time of year it is. Higher Watchcombe Farm is open all year round and although the advertised start day is a Saturday at quieter times of year you can have a shorter break. If you want to stay for a second week there is the added benefit of a discount, as well as if you are booking for a second trip.
The prices are really reasonable, click here for this year’s rates [opens new window]

Most of the cottages have their own washing machine and dryer but if you don’t feel like doing it yourself then for a modest charge Jane can arrange to have it done for you. Although you will probably not want to use them, if you do need to keep in touch with the office whilst you are away there are email and fax facilities available on request.

Where is Higher Watchcombe Farm?

Higher Watchcombe Farm is only 4 miles from the coast and about 20 minutes from Lyme Regis and 30 minutes from Sidmouth. It’s a great place to stay because it’s so convenient as a base for seeing the sights and sounds of East Devon. From London it’s about a 3½ hour drive and only about 30 minutes from Exeter airport.

The Galloways came to Devon in 2000 after a London career in banking and clerical work. They wanted to get away from the rat race but still needed to have interesting and varied work to do. They researched various places before deciding that Devon was not only a beautiful place for them to live but that they could share it with people like you by letting out holiday cottages.

Jane and Paul have continued to improve and build on both their facilities and reputation and I know that you will really love the holiday cottages at Higher Watchcombe Farm.
