Ruth Notman at Jurassic Folk, Seaton, 4th December
Ruth Notman is a contemporary folk singer/songwriter based in Nottinghamshire. Although now only aged 24, she has been maturing and honing her style and skill for over a decade in front of festival and venue audiences all over the UK, and Peter Arnold, Jurassic Folk organiser, recalls first booking her for Priddy Folk Festival when she was only 15.
Her debut album Threads received rousing national acclaim when it was released in 2007, being described as “remarkable…”- The Guardian. Ruth’s pure and powerful voice stunningly conveys stories of love, loss, adventure and heartache, weaving through simple stripped down ballads and soaring above sweeping strings arrangements. Her quirky piano melodies and catchy guitar riffs are augmented on her album with melodeon, fiddle, cello and beautiful harmonies. The result is a dynamic and striking album, which made the music world sit up and listen.
Her second album The Life of Lilly continued to push boundaries of folk. This ability to perform songs with such emotion and skill has led to recognition within the folk scene coming with endorsements from John Tams and Bob Harris and in an interview, Kate Rusby was asked about the state of the current folk scene: "I heard a girl recently called Ruth Notman," she commented, " I thought she was fantastic, really special."
After a musical sabbatical to concentrate on studies, Ruth is returning with more style than ever and is currently preparing to record her new Album which due for release late 2013.
Supporting Ruth is that ever popular singer songwriter, Robin Nancarrow, whose catchy songs are displayed at their best by his distinctive voice and guitar playing of great precision, not flashy, just perfect.
